Since the value of properties has quadrupled, some island land owners, far from being rich otherwise, are now subject to the wealth tax. Consequently, the small Ré island became the talk of the town and the controversial topic was used by politicians. Some of them have nicknamed it «The Ré Island Syndrome» a.k.a. the symbol of an unfair tax.
