The Mursis are one of the five ethnic groups living in the Omo valley, south of Ethiopia.
The Mursis women are well-known for the plate they carry on their lower lips. Specialists offer three hypothesises. The first one is aesthetic: the bigger the plate, the easiest it will be for her to find a wealthy husband. The second refers to animism: the plate would keep the bad spirits off her mouth. Finally, according to the third one, to the contrary of the first one, the plates main goal would be to make the woman look ugly and consequently to move slave traders away.
